This increased stability makes it more challenging for them to react with other elements.

Trends in Reactivity

As you move down Group 7, the reactivity of the halogens decreases. Chlorine reacts less vigorously with sodium than fluorine, and bromine reacts less vigorously with sodium than chlorine. This decrease in reactivity is due to the increasing number of electron shells between the outermost energy level and the nucleus.

In chemical reactions, the halogens gain one additional electron to achieve a full outer shell. As they are in Group 7, each has seven electrons in their outer shell, which makes it more difficult for them to react with other elements. This trend in reactivity is also reflected in their physical properties, such as low density and melting points.
